About Christian College Geelong

How we selected our software partner

Our decision to change school management software was driven by our need for improved learning management as the system we were using had declined in support quality and risen in escalating costs. Also, there was a lack of product development, raising concerns as we predicted the need for more functionality and features to meet our future growth. For parents and carers, it delivered a poor user experience and, additionally, added complexity for teachers, students, and parents having to navigate multiple platforms.

After reviewing the market, we chose Compass to enhance our teaching and learning programs and create a more engaging experience for our school community. Compass’ improved reporting capabilities, compared to our current reporting software, offers a more accurate representation of student learning progress through both continuous and semester reporting.

Additionally, Compass allows us to consolidate various independent systems into a single, integrated platform, streamlining our operations for simplicity and ease of use. The platform also brings broader value by improving the efficiency of processes across multiple areas of school and student management.

Over and above the platforms’ functionality, Compass stood out from other vendors due to the extensive support offered and the organisation’s size and strong track record of growth. This gave us confidence that they could effectively manage a multi-campus school of our size and complexity. In addition, College staff experienced with using Compass provided positive feedback, highlighting the platform’s reliability and user-friendliness.

Change management was critical for our consideration

Before making our decision, we had several important areas to be addressed. First, we needed to ensure that support for the platform would remain consistently reliable beyond the initial “honeymoon period.” We also considered the product’s longevity and whether it would continue to evolve. Additionally, we required assurance that the platform would integrate smoothly with our existing systems and infrastructure, which are essential for us to maintain.

Compass ticked all the boxes. We signed up in June 2024 and will be going live in Term 3, 2025. Due to some internal complexities at our school, we chose to adopt a longer onboarding process which has proven invaluable.

Overall we’ve been impressed by Compass’ flexibility in working within our timelines and initial budget constraints to find an effective solution. Their willingness to collaborate made the purchasing process smooth and addressed potential obstacles, ensuring we moved forward efficiently.

“Our implementation is progressing well. The support and onboarding experience provided by Compass has been exceptional, with a well-organised training plan and robust assistance for our steering group.”

Expectations and initial impressions of Compass

We look forward to the significant improvements in our administrative efficiency and overall engagement. We expect to see a reduction in admin time, allowing staff to focus more on educational support. We’re confident the platform’s robust data features will enhance support for our wellbeing team by providing quicker access to comprehensive, real-time student information. The platform’s live reporting module (Pulse) will provide timely, accurate insights into student and staff progress, supporting our commitment to data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.

Compass offers the potential for cost savings as we consolidate multiple platforms into one single system. We look forward to increased parent engagement through the Compass app, facilitating seamless and proactive communication across the school community.

In the initial months after going live, we anticipate a significant increase in parent and student engagement, with parents utilising the platform to stay connected to their children’s learning and school activities. Additionally, we aim for Compass to simplify staff processes and workflows, making daily administrative tasks more efficient while enhancing communication and collaboration across departments.

“Compass will be instrumental in helping our school achieve its goals by significantly improving organisational efficiency across key areas like teaching and learning, wellbeing, administration, and accounts.”
