Compass Product Update: September 2020

Compass Team

It's not every month that we launch a brand new module, but September brought together over a year of hard work with the launch of Compass Pulse, more of which below (you'll probably want to jump straight to that part of the blog now). We haven't just focused on releasing new modules though, packing in plenty of handy new updates to existing modules.

Without getting ahead of ourselves, we're also really excited about some of the changes we have to tell you about next month, so keep your eyes out for that over the next few weeks too (clue: we've got some great updates to Learning Tasks and Chronicle to release).

In the meantime, take a look at everything we've been up to over the last four weeks!

Get straight to the heart of your school's data with Compass Pulse

See Pulse come to life in our animated video.

We're very happy to announce the release of Compass Pulse, our brand new data visualisation and insights module - something we know many of you have wanted from Compass for a long time. It's taken a lot of hard work to get to this point, and we’d like to thank all the school communities who trialled the module and provided us with feedback and advice. You've been instrumental in the development Pulse, which we hope will make the lives of teachers and school administrators a little bit - or even a lot - easier.

You can learn more about Pulse latest blog by Catherine Elliot-Jones, General Manager of Data & Analytics at Compass.

Flexibility to set start and finish times for Attendance Notes and School Activities

In our ongoing effort to meet the unique needs of all school types across Australia and Europe, we've enhanced Compass to give schools’ greater flexibility when creating Attendance Notes and School Activities. The default school day (8am-5pm) will remain the same. However, if your school has classes that fall outside of these 'standard' times -  for example, activities before school, after school workshops or students who are permanently onsite (boarding) - you can now update the standard school day start and finish times to better suit your specific needs.

This will also change the default start and finish times for parents when they are adding an Attendance Note to explain a student absence to ensure it covers each student's entire schedule. In addition, this enhancement will enable boarding schools to set arrival and departure times for students from Sickbay within these hours.

We've made start and finish times much more flexible, and they're this easy to change!

Easier access to booking times for Parent/Student/Teacher conferences

In response to feedback from parents and schools, we’ve introduced a new feature making it easier for parents and students to access information about their Parent/Student/Teacher (PST) meetings. Parents can now email themselves a copy of their PST conference times and room locations after they’ve completed their booking process in Compass. This means parents do not need to log back in to Compass to review their schedule on the day of the PST meetings. Having the full schedule in their email inbox will make things a lot less stressful for many parents, allowing them to focus on ensuring they have a high-quality discussion with their child’s teachers.

Teacher timesaver: new automatic class enrolments in Learning Tasks when pushing from School Resources

We’ve just released the functionality to automatically enroll all students from a class/subject straight into a Learning Task as you push it out from School Resources!

Follow the steps above and your student's will be automatically enrolled into a Learning Task in no time.

Once you've selected the Learning Task to be distributed, you'll notice a tick box labelled: ‘Include all enrolled students in selected Learning Task’. Ticking this box will automatically add all of the students from your chosen Subject/Class into the Learning Task. If you wish to restrict the Learning Task to a specific group of students in your chosen Subject/Class, you can still do so by editing the list of students in the enrolled tab of the Learning Task back on the Class or Subject page.

Integration with SchoolEdge Timetable (SETT) by Tribal

FirstClass has been one of the timetabling packages of choice for schools for many years. Over the last couple of months, we've worked with Tribal to ensure their new timetabling package SchoolEdge Timetabling (SETT) is compatible with Compass using the LISS API standard which means you can sync to Compass directly from SETT without the Compass Data Sync Tool.

We are happy to announce after working with Tribal and a pilot school we are satisfied that SETT will be available for schools looking to update from FirstClass or their timetabling package for the 2021 academic year. For more detail, please reach out to Tribal who will be able to assist in updating you to SETT.
