Victorian Curriculum: Mathematics Version 2.0

The revised Mathematics Curriculum includes changes to the Achievement Standards used by teachers to assess and report student learning across Levels Foundation to 10.

While Version 1.0 has 3 separate Achievement Standards, Version 2.0 has a single Achievement Standard (VCM2MA) which encompasses six strands or areas; Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics, and Probability. As outlined by the Department of Education (DET), the new Achievement Standard is marked on the scale of 0.5-11, with A-D levels having not yet been revised.

In alignment with DET requirements, we have added the single consolidated Mathematics 2.0 Achievement Standard (VCM2MA) to the existing Victorian Curriculum Achievement Standards Report Element.

Can we report against the 6 strands in Compass?

While reporting against the 6 strands is not a requirement of the DET, this additional information may also be included in reports, as long as an overarching teacher judgement against Mathematics Version 2.0 is also provided. Only the single strand is required when reporting back to CASES21.

If your school wishes to include all 6 strands on a student’s reports, you can do this using a separate Report Element that meets your school’s formatting requirements and grading criteria.

Can we use both Version 1.0 and 2.0?

In 2024, while use of Mathematics Version 2.0 is optional, a school may use both 1.0 and 2.0 within their reports. If your school has implemented Version 2.0, Version 1.0 can still be used where a student requires the A-D levels. Please note that no individual student should be marked against both 1.0 and 2.0, as this will result in import errors in CASES21.

For example, the first image below shows Student A marked against the Mathematics 1.0 curriculum, while the second image shows Student B marked against Mathematics 2.0 in the same Report Cycle:

When marking the students in the same class against both Mathematics 1.0 and 2.0, it is important to ensure that students are marked as ‘Excluded’ for the respective curriculum strands. Students marked against 1.0 will need to be excluded from 2.0, and vice versa:

Please see an example of how this will appear in the ‘All Results’ export below:

Will we still be able to see previous results?

Mathematics Version 2.0 is not considered to be continuous with the current Mathematics Version 1.0 curriculum. As such, there will be no progression or previous results when you first move from Mathematics 1.0 to Mathematics 2.0.

All reports after your first time using the Mathematics 2.0 curriculum will display students’ progression or previous results as normal.

What about Learning Tasks?

We have also added a new Victorian Curriculum (VCM2MA: Mathematics) Grading Component to Learning Tasks with the same functionality as existing Victorian Curriculum Grading Components.
